Adopting senior cats - why older cats make great pets

Senior cats are often the last to be adopted at shelters. Adopting an older cat has its own advantages with the relationship going both ways, for cat and yourself.

lower maintenance

Elderly cats are mostly quieter and calmer than younger ones, thus requiring less supervision. They are used to household life, and know ground rules of living with people. Instead of becoming bored or restless in your absence, they are more likely to doze, leaving your home intact. An older cat adopted from shelters will probably be neutered and vaccinated.

no surprises

With older cats, what you see is what you get. When you adopt a senior cat, you already know how big it’ll be, its personality and temperament making selecting a perfect companion for you easy.

well mannered

Older cats have already learned the “family rules” making them more home-oriented and settled. They are less likely to thrash the house, know where to go and how to behave. Any behavioral issues will most likely be from previous owners and not from your “training”. If you enjoy pampering cats, an older feline will be much more appreciative of attention than a kitten.

independent

Older cats possess less energy, and are more placid than kittens, content to spending much of their time idling by. As they slow down, they become less energetic and less alarmingly acrobatic. They are at their most companionable in later years; while they enjoy attention and companionship, they will not pester you continually. Owners find caring for older cats a very rewarding experience, and in return, an older cat will enjoy the love and security provided.
