Dogs with separation anxiety

Planning now before you return to work can help dogs with potential separation anxiety.

For many pet parents, one of the perks of the COVID-19 hiatus has been spending more time with their pets while hunkered down at home over the last few months.

The new normal has been almost 24/7 togetherness amongst family members, including those with four legs.

Dogs with separation anxiety do not tend to do well when it comes to change.

prepare your dog for alone times with a regular routine

Separation anxiety usually begins when your dog picks up on different cues that tell them you are about to leave the house.

Actions like putting on your shoes to picking up your bag, signal to your dog that they are about to be left alone.

Get your canine prepared for alone times with these tips:

DO DON'T

Practice leaving for short periods of time to run essential errands or go for a walk

Come back in the house if your dog barks or paws at the door when you leave, come back only when he is quiet.

Decrease the amount of time that you leave, even if for just a few seconds, if your dog shows signs of panic,
Pay attention when your dog is active and misbehaving. Reward him only when he is being calm and independent.
Create a safe, comfortable and quiet place for him in the house for him to go to when he is feeling anxious.
Give elaborate goodbyes which increase his anxiety.
Provide enrichment activities that he can enjoy independently such as treats in boxes and stuffed toys.
-
Leave the TV or radio running to provide a distracting background noise for your dog
-
Carry out your leaving cues without actually leaving the house. For example, pick up your keys but then stay in the house. Repeat this action multiple times to desensitize our dog.
