A dog bed is an essential design element in the renovation of this house.
Canadian architecture firm StudioAC design approach to the Sheridan Residence in Toronto involves using plywood as the main material for its scandi-chic aesthetic and functional appeal. The smooth surface of plywood is easy to clean for a dog-friendly space.
“Rather than imagine a home comprised of rooms within an open plan we conceived a room revolving around a singular mass,” said StudioAC. The ‘mass’ presents the aesthetic grounding for the project while also containing all of its support functions in a clean plywood wrapper.
“The genesis of producing a space for the pup came out of a simple line in the brief, requesting we consider a space for a dog bed,” the studio said. “With such a modest amount of space it wasn’t an insignificant request.”

Within the 1,500 square feet of floor area, the plywood volume is used to lengthen the relatively modest floor plan that contains the living, dining, kitchen and entry. By stretching itself across the programs and extending the kitchen surface, the plywood volume creates a functional graphic that leads the eye across the space.
While the mass acts as an aesthetic tool it also contains a foyer, closet, stairs, kitchen and even as a little house for their family dog, Rusty.

The house is designed around the family dog’s needs to incorporate spaces for the dog to sleep, eat and play.
The kitchen is open plan in a white theme to complement the wooden palette.
Entrance to Rusty’s nook is recessed and trimmed in white to complement the wood.
The dining area is decidedly rustic and cosy.

A customized unit built from plywood segregates the ground floor, creating spaces for a foyer, a living and dining.

White and glossy surfaces visually opens up small areas like the kitchen and bathroom considerably.

As the design of the plywood piece progressed an opportunity was observed at its centre to produce a moment of delight and fun while also making better use of the overall floor plan.
Upstairs are two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a master bedroom with en-suite, all following the white and wooden palette that runs throughout the home.
“We stuck with the prototypical form and finished the dog house in white paint so it can pop against the plywood mass it lives in,” said the studio.
